Christmas Decoration ideas
Christmas decoration ideas can come from just about anywhere. They can arise from a Christmas card we may have received, from a television show, or from a website we have visited. For my wife and me, we have chosen to base our Christmas decoration ideas on things and events that have had an impact on our lives.
Story Telling Theme Number 1 – Religious
My wife loves to collect nativity sets, so many of our interior Christmas decorating centers on that theme. One of our more favorite nativity sets was one that we made by hand. This set was a series of cut out figures that were then hand painted. Not only was this set nice to look at, it also served as a teaching tool for our kids and now for our grandkids.

For our Christmas tree, we choose to use ornaments that have been hand crafted. We then augment those decorations with purchased ornaments that complement the theme. Our tree takes on the theme of angels and we alternate the lighting arrangement (many lights) with solid colored lights or multicolored lights.
We live in an apartment, so we do not have much opportunity to utilize outdoor Christmas decorations. We do add lights to our patio railing, and depending upon availability, a lighted nativity scene.
Story Telling Theme Number 2 – Retro
Many people enjoy remembering decorations from the past. And where technology has been matched to some of the old styles, it is much easier to achieve a retro Christmas.
I can remember the old-fashioned aluminum Christmas tree. When first introduced to the market in the late 1950's it was the rage. Because it was made of metal components, you could not put ordinary Christmas lights on the tree. However, there was a way to illuminate the tree. There was a color wheel that consisted of a flood lamp and a lens wheel of multiple colors that rotated giving a varying color to the tree. You can still find an aluminum Christmas tree and color wheel today.
There are even imitations of the big, hot tree light bulbs of the past. Thankfully, these now are made as LED’s and burn much cooler and take less energy. Look closely, and you will even find bubble lights with newer technology.
Love the looks and scents of candles but don’t like the fire hazard? You will be glad to know there are even imitation candles made with LED’s that give off a very realistic glow.
If you have a large picture window that is on the main street side of your house, you can place your retro tree here and let it be a focal point into your Christmas yard art.
Story Telling Them Number 3 – Whimsical/Cartoon
For some, their Christmas decoration ideas include a sense of humor and maybe a bit of fantasy. These decorations include various cartoon characters or characters commonly associated with Christmas decorations.
There is the traditional Santa Clause, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, and elves. There are whimsical cartoon characters everyone has come to love. And there are animated animal figures to bring a bit of wildlife adventure to the scene.
All of these characters will come to life with a wide variety of animated lights, with inflatable features, and with blowing fans to create a waving affect.
Decide what Christmas means to you and your family. Observe your surroundings, the stores you visit, and the assortment of decorations you see in your neighborhood and around your commercial establishments. You will be amazed at the number of Christmas decoration ideas that are available. Tell your Christmas story through your selection of Christmas ornaments, your Christmas yard art, and your Christmas lawn decorations. You will be glad you did.
